Dig Dug.

Released in 1985, Dig Dug was one of the classic arcade games along with games like Pac Man and Donkey Kong. With it being released in the 80’s it was only able to be played with the arcade machines. the machines controls varied depending on the stiles of games. Dig Dug has one joystick to move the character up, down and side to side.

The aim of the game was to defeat all enemies and dig up as much dirt as you could.

The intended audience for the game would have been the younger people because they would have been the most likely to go to an arcade to spend money and play it, and by targeting younger audiences they would earn more money. They also were targeting a male audience because in those days video games was more of a guy thing to play so they wouldn’t really target games for the girls.

To us now the game would seem pretty simple and easy but back in the 80’s the game was well made and took a lot of skill by learning patterns to the game in order to get the highest score possible. The patterns could range from the enemies movements to the placement of rocks in levels. Once you cracked the patterns you cracked the game.

There wasn’t much animation or VFX in the game as it was still the early days of games  but you could see small animations when the character or enemy died or when you are digging. In the 80’s this would have been a harder to include as not many people understood game making or animation back then so by having a small bit of animation in a game was pretty big.

Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead is a cooperative first-person shooter video game with survival horror elements. Set during the aftermath of a zombie outbreak, the game pits its four “Survivors” against large hordes of infected humans AKA Zombies. Left 4 Dead was well received by people upon its release, with praise given for its repayable value, focus on cooperative play, and movie-like experience. Several criticisms were aimed at limited level selection and the lack of a narrative. The game has won several publication awards, as well as distinctions from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

I remember playing this game when I was younger and I still enjoy playing it now with my brothers and sisters.

The game was able add more aspects to the game because of the controllers for the Playstations and the Xbox. The controllers had the two joysticks, so that allowed the aspect of moving the camera and looking around in 1st person. It also allows the game to add more things to the games for example ‘Press X to reload, Y to Pick up item, A to Jump and B to Melee Attack’ and because of that it wouldn’t have to stay with the basic platform games which would only need 3 controls.

Around the 2000’s, games started to reach for an older audience as well as the younger. So with games like Left 4 Dead and Call of duty it allowed game designers to add more graphical things to games like blood and zombies. This game would still be targeting a male audience but around this time the female gamer population started to grow, however it was still small.
